Street dogs are also known here in the Philippines as Asong Kalye, these are dogs on the street which is not own by anyone, and no specific person responsible for taking care of these dogs or maybe there is a person owning these dogs but didn’t held any responsibilities for them (napabayaan na). While K-9 is an abbreviation and homophone of Canine. It has been said that the term came from the military, where namings such as G2 are being used in address to respective person or thing. The term originally pertains to war dogs but was carried on to police, sentry and assistance dogs.
The Philippine Coast Guard in Davao Region schooled street dogs to become a member of K9 units. They said that there were 20 askals underwent training for k9 units pass through the course. Even so, the problems with askals are that the attention span of these dogs is shorter than those other dogs that they usually school to become members of K9 units. Askals dogs prefer to play than train. They also said that local breeds of dogs have the potential to become k9 units, which can also do the same task if given the proper training like the other imported breed dogs. And training high-breed dogs would be costly and in a way our local dogs can really help on this issue.
I think it’s better for the PCG in using their initiatives to train our local breed dogs to help them in security purposes. It is of best also for the street dogs especially those dogs that are not being taken care of by the owner. At least they’ll be trained and provide them their needs especially their foods, instead of just staying there in the streets and sometimes cost harm to anyone. However, let’s not forget that these dogs of ours need to be pampered also and have time to play with them as well and not just over used them for our personal intentions. Remember to treat them fairly and respect them because they’re created by God just like us. Be kind to creatures.
